
Let’s Talk About Shortwave Halogen Heating Lamps
If you need to move a lot of heat, fast, these are your best bet. Basically, we take a tungsten filament, wrap it in a quartz tube, and fill the whole thing with a specific halogen gas mix. Why the gas? Because it keeps the filament from evaporating too quickly. It means we can crank the heat way up without the lamp just giving up and burning out on you.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing about power: it’s all a balancing act between wattage, voltage, and how long the tube is. If you’re running a 400V system, you’re getting a lot more “punch” per millimeter than you would with a standard 230V setup. It’s perfect for those high-speed lines where your material needs to hit its melting point in a matter of seconds. But a word of warning. All that power creates a ton of waste heat. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, you’re going to end up warping your reflectors. And nobody wants to deal with that.
The Build: Quartz and Plugs
We use high-purity quartz for the envelope. We do this so the shortwave radiation can just fly straight through the glass instead of getting trapped inside. Some of our lamps have special coatings if you need to shift the light spectrum or add a layer of protection. As for the plugs, we usually stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re simple, reliable, and fit right into most industrial ovens. They stay put, too—which is a big deal when your machinery is vibrating or swinging through wild temperature changes.
Putting Them to Work
You’ll see these all over the place, from PET bottle blowing machines to curing lines. The best part? They’re instant. No waiting around for a warm-up period. You flip the switch, and you have heat. Since these lamps use radiation instead of just heating up the air, you can aim the heat exactly where you need it. You don’t have to bake the entire chamber just to heat one small part, which saves you a decent amount on your energy bill. One last tip:be careful how you handle them. These tubes hate fingerprints. A little bit of oil or a smudge from your skin can create a “hot spot” on the quartz, and that’s a one-way ticket to a broken lamp. Always wear gloves.
