
Let’s Talk About Ruby-Coated Quartz Halogen Heaters
Ever notice how some heaters just scorch the surface of your part while the inside stays cold? That’s where ruby quartz lamps come in. Basically, we take a quartz envelope and give it a ruby-colored coating. It sounds like a cosmetic choice, but it’s actually doing some heavy lifting. The red tint filters out the UV and the shorter wavelengths—the stuff that usually burns the “skin” of your material. Instead, it pushes the heat deeper into the core. It’s the difference between searing a steak and slow-roasting it.
The Power Stuff
These things get hot, and they do it fast. Depending on your setup, you’ll probably be looking at 230V or 400V tubes. Here’s the deal: if you have a long tube, going with a higher voltage lets us pump in more wattage without cranking the current so high that your wiring starts to melt. If you’re running a 2500W tube, please, double-check your cables. If your wire gauge is too thin, you’ll get voltage drops. That means some parts of your heater bank will be screaming hot while others are just lukewarm. Not ideal.
How They’re Built
We use high-purity quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. We also use a halogen cycle. Without it, the tungsten filament would just evaporate and gunk up the inside of the glass, killing the lamp way too soon. For the ends, we usually stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. They should slide right into most industrial ovens without a fuss. Just one tip: check your socket tension. If the contact is loose, you’ll get hotspots that can actually melt the plastic housing. It’s a small detail, but it saves you a huge headache later.
Where This Actually Matters
You’ll see these most often in PET blowing, powder coating, or curing automotive paint. The ruby coating is the secret sauce here. It stops that annoying “skin effect” where the outside of a plastic part melts into a puddle before the center even gets warm. Just keep in mind that because the ruby filter blocks some of the light, you aren’t getting 100% of the raw heat you’d get from a clear lamp. You might need to leave your parts in a bit longer or pack more lamps into your array to hit that target internal temperature.
