A Straight-Talk Guide to Tungsten Halogen IR Lamps
Ever wonder why some heaters just feel… stronger? It’s all in the build. We use a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz tube and fill the whole thing with halogen gas. This creates a little loop where the tungsten evaporates and then settles right back onto the filament. It keeps the lamp running hot, which pushes the heat into those shorter wavelengths. Getting the Power Right
When you’re picking a lamp, the voltage and wattage are what really dictate your heat density. If you’re doing PET blowing or rapid curing, you need high-wattage tubes to cram a ton of thermal energy into a tiny space. You’ll see these in everything from basic line voltages to heavy-duty industrial setups. But here’s a tip: if you’re stuffing a high-wattage tube into a tight housing,**don’t skimp on the cooling fans.**If you do, your sockets will overheat and fry. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
Quartz and Connections
We stick with high-purity quartz for the envelope because it can handle the thermal shock without cracking. Depending on what you’re heating, you can go with clear glass or a coated version. The coated ones are great because they bounce the infrared energy back toward your target instead of letting it waste away. For the plugs, we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basically drop-in replacements for most industrial heaters. They fit tight, which is exactly what you want so you don’t get any scary arcing when the current kicks in.
Making it Work in the Real World
These lamps are perfect for line-of-sight heating. Since they emit shortwave heat, they actually penetrate the material rather than just warming the surface. Plus, you can wire them for pulsed operation. It saves power and makes the lamps last a lot longer. One last thing—and this is huge—**keep your fingers off the glass.**Quartz hates skin oils. If you touch the tube during installation, those oils create hot spots that will crack the glass the moment you turn it on. Just give them a quick wipe with some alcohol before you power up, and you’re good to go.
